Conservation Programs for Communities

"You don't know the value of water until the well has run dry". Recent drought conditions across the nation have heightened our awareness that drinking water is a precious commodity. As a result, municipalities and private water companies are implementing strict water restrictions.

One way municipalities and private water companies are managing the water shortage is by setting up a water bank that requires commercial and residential developers to create and implement water conservation programs.
Water Departments are requiring a 2:1 savings program. That is for every gallon of water that the proposed development is expected to use, a program has to be setup to save two gallons. The savings can be accomplished through a variety of programs. Coler & Colantonio, Inc. has worked with developers and water departments to develop creative and acceptable water conservation plans. One approach is to retrofit existing homes or commercial customers with low flow faucets and showerheads. Other options include leak detection and repair, or conducting water audits on commercial businesses to identify potential water saving improvements.

For one project, Abington Commons, a Water and Wastewater Savings Program has been developed to conserve the allotted amount of water and wastewater for acceptance of a Comprehensive Permit. The Savings Program will conserve approximately 67,000 gallons of water per day from Abington & Rockland Joint Water Works and approximately 45,000 gallons of wastewater per day from the Town of Abington sewer system. A comprehensive study was conducted to identify the potential savings from various water users (residential, schools, industrial, commercial, etc.) in both towns. The combination of a system wide education and retrofit campaign, and a leak detection and repair program provided the necessary savings.

Coler & Colantonio, Inc. continues to work with our private and public clients to promote progress without allowing the well to run dry.
